As Fast as We Can
Stone: Lithographic Tusche and Crayon
1 Run with Hand Colouring
250mm x 350mm
2004

Lithograph by Nicolette Carter.

I originally trained as a painter, but for the past twenty years I have also explored sculpture, animation and printmaking. I am a member of ‘Skylark’, an artist run gallery based on london’s South Bank and my work features in several private collections.

I have always used drawing as the starting point for my work and my drawings have been selected for the Cheltenham and Taunton Drawing Opens and by the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton.

I also belong to a community of artists with studios at Oaks Park in Surrey, where I was introduced to lithography by my friend and fellow artist Simon Burder.

I enjoy the organic, elemental feel of using the stones. The process seems intensely physical, complex, alchemical and even ritualistic; but there is also a simplicity and a directness to it. Marks made on the stone are faithfully reproduced on the paper.

The print ‘As Fast as We Can’ was a natural development of a style of drawing, which had evolved from using a pipette to draw with liquid media. This made it harder to control the line and gave it an animated fluid quality. The touches of primary colour applied by hand to the individual prints added a sense of child-like energy and enthusiasm to the finished work.
