Lithograph by John Claridge.

My first collaboration with The Curwen Studio was in 1984 and together we produced eight lithographs. What struck me was the intense beauty of lithography and working with committed and passionate people who understood a real craft that, in my opinion, is sorely lacking in some so called modern disciplines.

So it was with great pleasure to be involved with The Curwen Studio’s new venture of Contones, a process that Stanley Jones has evolved using the classic beauty of lithography. We never stop looking and learning and with Contones another door has been opened for me, sharing the depth and understanding of a true and important medium. Long live Lithography!

John Claridge opened his own studio in the City of London at the age of 19. Since then he has worked for leading advertising agencies and clients worldwide. His work has been exhibited worldwide and he has been presented with over 700 awards for photography, both editorial and commercial.

The Contone process involves using a positive photoplate printed on an offset press. In Contone the positive film used is made from an original negative of the same size as the final image. As the film is exposed directly on to the positive plate, no scanning is involved and therefore a true continuous tone is achieved. Plate flash exposed and developed gently to gain the level of detail required. In this print the plate was printed on an offset press.
