Paul Croft qualified as a Master Printer at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque in 1996 and now teaches printmaking at the School of Art in Aberystwyth. He has written and published two books on Stone Lithography (2001) and Plate Lithography (2003).
Employing techniques of stone, plate and waterless lithography, in his most recent work, he has become interested in developing a series conceived from drawings based upon letter forms of the alphabet - in which the historical roots of letters are being examined. The resulting prints employ lithographic materials such as reticulating tusche and crayon to draw calligraphic forms that reflect combinations of actual and imagined letter forms derived from a variety of sources including hieroglyphic, Phoenician, Roman and other alphabetic systems. All prints are hand drawn on stone and on ball grained aluminium plate and are printed in limited editions of approximately 10 - 15 impressions.
