Moyna Flannigan was invited to make a series of prints at Edinburgh Printmakers in 2000. The resulting project became a series of five prints entitled ‘The Femme Fatale’.
Flannigan paints portraits of fictitious figures in oil paints and watercolours. Some of her characters appear to be more or less everyday people, but others are disturbing or ambiguous in appearance, while still others are highly alluring. Instead of working from models or photographs, Flannigan’s fictitious characters arise from her imagination, vigorously nourished by her recollections of everyday life.
Flannigan had previously created lithographs in earlier years however her work has changed considerably in style since then. This invitation to produce prints in collaboration with Master Printer Alastair Clark at Edinburgh Printmakers allowed her to explore new working methods, combining stone lithography with the use of photo-lithography. Developing layers on acetate exposed and printed from photoplate enabled the delicacy and freshness of her work to be realised.
Flannigan has participated in numerous exhibitions in the United Kingdom and abroad, including Here and Now: Scottish Art 1990 – 2000 at Dundee Contemporary Arts; Open Country Scotland: Contemporary Scottish Artists at Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne and The national Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
