Lithograph by Malcolm Franklin.

My interest in lithography was sparked by a comment on my drawing by the Cypriot printmaker Hambis Tsangaris, while I was working in his studio in 2002. His suggestion that I should explore lithography prompted me to contact Simon Burder, in whose studio I have worked for the last four years.

As a sculptor I welcome the possibility of using stone for something other than for three-dimensional objects. My lithographs are an extension of my sculptural practice and stand by themselves as expression of thought processes in a two-dimensional medium. I see the direct nature of the lithographic process as akin to the process of direct carving. I like the way the stone immediately responds to additive and reductive action and provides an extensive range of possibilities for mark making.
