This print is one of thirteen prints in the series called Spirits and Guardians 2005 – 2006 of which four are lithographs. I made these images in order to explore the theme of the human-animal bond, with particular reference to Native American mythology. The female figures in the prints have a protective, maternal role, as well as embodying the animal portrayed in a human form. In effect they are a human alter ego. The female guardian also derives protection and comfort from the animals that she holds.
This was my first experience of lithography, working with Frank Janzen, Master printer at Crows Shadow Institute of the Arts, in Oregon USA. Having studied woodblock printing in Japan, and using the relief print as a starting point for my screenprints, I found lithography a very loose and painterly medium that altered my imagery beyond recognition.
Photolithography however allowed my carved blocks to be reproduced with a lovely depth and richness of black that I felt was appropriate to my imagery.
