Lithograph by Sara Ogilvie.

Underpass was created while I was Artist in Residence at Malaspina Print Workshop in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2004. This print forms part of a body of work focussing on ideas of getting from A to B, the pit-falls, the non-starters and spaces we move through to get there. It had been a few years since I had worked on limestone. I’d forgotten what a great surface it is.

My first experience of lithography was at Edinburgh College of Art over fifteen years ago. It was a love-hate relationship; I loved the painterly directness and rich colour layering while hating my image scumming up with ink, filling in on my zinc litho plate and the frustration that came with it. However I persevered and continued to create lithographs, using stone for many years afterwards at Edinburgh printmakers Workshop.

Lithography can’t be rushed. It’s a constant learning experience. The stages take time, patience and practice. But it’s all time well spent when you see the diverse and unique range of printed washes and marks revealed on the paper retaining the original spontaneity of the drawing.
