Lithograph by Rebecca Payn.

There is something very attractive about drawing on to the pristine, freshly grained surface of limestone, the wonderful marks and textures that can be achieved and the way the grain of the stone gives these marks a soft, organic quality on the printed paper.

Stone lithography is a process I have explored since acquiring, in 2000, a lithography press and a number of good quality stones. I enjoy the craft of lithography and my gradual acquisition of skill and understanding of the process and the endless possibilities that lithography allows for combining drawn marks, colours and textures.

My prints tend to begin with one drawing. I will then work with that image, adjusting it, adding layers of colour and texture, so that gradually I arrive at a completed image I am happy with. Working with several stones allows me to do this.

I also enjoy the possibilities opened up by combining stone lithography with other print media such as photo-lithography, monoprints and even painting. Prints evolve by exploring an initial idea through these different media, with the processes themselves and the decisions I make along the way all influencing the final image.
