The subject of my work is landscape: a recent series of prints was developed from an intensive study of a particular area of the River Thames near where I live.
The river’s constant flux impacts on the surrounding landscape, moving from flooded inundations to the earthy texture of the empty riverbed. I select specific features of this kind, which are explored in closely studied drawings made on site. These drawings are deliberate preparatory studies for the prints.
The print Low Tide II resulted from a period of work at Oaks Park Lithography Studio. This gave me the opportunity to combine layers of washes printed from stone with the physical marks that result from etching on metal, where a tangible layer of ink sits on top of the print surface.
I am drawn to the idea of making prints in consecutive form, where each image must exist and be complete by itself yet is also part of a larger narrative sequence, which allows for a progressive search for a sense of place.
